Article on "Glass Hill" by Steve Davis in The Buzz
Jailed son of kicking guru subject of new book
Gene Wilson, who built a local PR empire through the '80s and '90s in Dallas, has just has his fifth book published.
This one, Glass Hill , is the frightening and grim story of Michael Kapoustin, a Sunset graduate who is serving a 17-year sentence in Sofia, Bulgaria, after being convicted of stealing money from his own company.
Here's the local sports kicker – no pun intended:
Michael is the only son of Bob Kap, who once had a huge influence on the Cowboys and on pro football in general. Kap convinced the Cowboys hierarchy of the time – Tex Schramm, Tom Landry and Gil Brandt – to sign a soccer player named Toni Fritsch.
It was the beginning of the end for old-style straight-on kickers, and Kap eventually placed nine European soccer players into kicking roles with NFL teams. He was also a painter, and one work that was a gift to commissioner Pete Rozelle now hangs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
For the book, Wilson spent time in Bulgaria with Kapoustin, who has served 11 years and could be released a little early.
